Unless stated otherwise, stairs should be avoided in any rehabilitation programme, this includes steps in the garden. Please block them off with a stair gait or alternative. If you have a small dog and can carry them up and down the stairs, then this is ok, if there is no risk of your dog using the stairs when you put them down. Please ask your therapist about the best way to carry your dog without putting strain on his or her body. Stairs can cause slips, trips, excessive loading through the joints and increased pressure through their spine. It is important that your dog is first comfortable and strong enough before attempting them.
