After an injury or surgery, pets often require some hind end support. The easiest tool to use is a sling. You can purchase a sling online, or even make one yourself by using a towel, sheet, or reusable grocery bag cut down the sides. The sling should be placed right under their lower belly (right in front of their hind limbs). When your pet is walking use the handles or ends of the towel/sheet to provide just as much support as they need. If your pet is very unstable and is very painful when trying to weight bear on the hind end, provide significant support so that your pet is only placing minimal weight on the affects limb (this is typical in the immediate post injury/surgery recovery). If your pet is weight bearing well on the affected limb and seems comfortable to do so, they may only need light support when walking or posturing to eliminate.
