Isometric muscle contractions occur without shortening or lengthening the muscle, i.e. standing.

In therapy, we use these muscle contractions to increase strength, ideal in situations where the joint or the soft tissue is not in a state to be mobilised, i.e. recently after surgery.

Your therapist will show you an exercise to be utilised at home to help strengthen muscles with isometric muscular contractions.

Most importantly – you will not see a movement in the muscle you are targeting.
