Short controlled leash walks are essential during the rehabilitation period. When asked to slow lead, you should encourage your dog to walk on a slow 4-beat pace. It is a simple exercise that disunite the limbs and increases muscular effort without speed. If your dog is small, it is likely they trot to match your pace, so you must walk slow to allow them to walk only. The slower the better!
Walks must be slow enough to allow weight bearing of all limbs; walking too fast may result in carrying the affected leg. Make sure you do not pull on the lead excessively. The dog should be praised while walking and using the limb. Walking speed may be increased when the limb is consistently used at a slow walk.
